Diagnostic Ultrasound at GWP Physical Therapy

Real-time insights. Smarter treatment. Faster results.
At GWP Physical Therapy, we use the latest in ultrasound technology—the Butterfly iQ3—to get a clearer view of what’s going on beneath the surface. That means more precise diagnoses, more targeted care, and better outcomes for you.
What Is Diagnostic Ultrasound?
Diagnostic ultrasound is a safe, non-invasive imaging tool that allows us to see muscles, tendons, ligaments, nerves, and joints in real time—without radiation.
Using sound waves, the Butterfly iQ3 delivers high-resolution images directly to a mobile device, helping your therapist identify:
- Muscle tears
- Tendon or ligament injuries
- Nerve impingements
- Inflammation or swelling
- Joint abnormalities
All while you’re in the clinic—no referral or imaging center visit needed.
Why It Matters
Ultrasound helps us:
- Diagnose more accurately
- Track your healing process
- Personalize your rehab plan
- Know when to progress—or pause—treatment
You’ll spend less time guessing, and more time getting better.

Frequently Asked Questions
About Diagnostic Ultrasound at GWP Physical Therapy
Q: Is ultrasound imaging safe?
A: Yes. Diagnostic ultrasound is completely safe and non-invasive. It uses sound waves—not radiation—to create images, making it ideal for repeated use during your recovery process.
Q: Does ultrasound imaging hurt?
A: Not at all. Most patients describe it as a comfortable, painless process. We simply apply a water-based gel to the area being examined and glide the ultrasound probe over your skin.
Q: How long does it take?
A: A typical ultrasound assessment takes about 10–20 minutes and is often done during your regular physical therapy session. You’ll get results in real time.
Q: Who reads the ultrasound?
A: Musculoskeletal Ultrasound can be read in-house by a trained Physical Therapist.
Q: Will I still need an MRI or X-ray?
A: In many cases, no. Diagnostic ultrasound gives us detailed, real-time information about soft tissue and joint structures. However, if further imaging is needed, we’ll guide you through that process.A benefit of diagnostic ultrasound is utilizing dynamic video of structures (muscles, tendons, ligaments, etc). MRI is a still image while ultrasound can utilize both still imaging and dynamic structural movement to diagnose.
Q: What’s the difference between ultrasound imaging and therapeutic ultrasound?
A: Great question! Diagnostic ultrasound is used to see inside your body and make accurate assessments. Therapeutic ultrasound is an older modality used to warm tissues—less commonly used today. At GWP, we use diagnostic ultrasound with the Butterfly iQ3 to guide our care with precision.
