Injured from a car accident? We can help!

Have you or someone you know been in a car accident? Do you remember being in pain afterward and struggling to find quality care for your injuries? GWP Physical Therapy is here for you!

Can physical therapy help after a car accident?

Pain and other symptoms are not always experienced immediately following a car accident. Even if you are not currently experiencing symptoms from the impact, physical therapy is still beneficial! Due to the time it takes for our body to feel the effects of the impact, it is helpful to start physical therapy as soon as possible in order to prevent further pain that may cause future compensations in the body.

Common problems that arise from car accidents are low back pain, neck pain, shoulder pain, concussions, impingement, and many other symptoms. Oftentimes, pain and other symptoms do not appear until days, or even weeks, after the accident. Physical therapy can help keep you out of pain and give you tools to help combat your symptoms if and when they do appear.

We approach physical therapy by using a combination of soft tissue work, mobility, and strengthening to help you get the most out of your rehab experience. Your therapy should be tailored to you and your specific goals.

FAQ

What is GWP Physical Therapy’s treatment approach?

At GWP Physical Therapy, we focus on the patient. Each session usually starts with manual therapy to decrease tightness and tension in the soft tissue and improve joint mechanics. This allows us to strengthen the new available range of motion. We focus on return to function and tailor our patient’s treatment plan around the individual goals of the patient.

What are common misconceptions about seeking physical therapy after a car accident?

Going through a car accident is a traumatic experience and going to medical professionals can be scary.
Some patients have experienced physical therapy before in a clinic that did not offer one-on-one patient care, with little privacy or individualized care. Sometimes these patients feel that they won’t be taken care of or heard properly because of this past experience. At GWP Physical Therapy, our patients receive a private treatment room with the same therapist each time they come in. This provides a quiet treatment environment if needed for the patients that have concussions or headaches.

Another misconception is that physical therapy will be only exercises. However, manual therapy and neuromuscular re-education is included in our treatment to help rehab the patient’s injured area.

How does GWP’s approach to car accident rehabilitation differ from other clinics?

At GWP Physical Therapy, we focus on one-on-one patient care, making sure each patient is heard and feels safe. We meet our patients where they are at and progress them as their body allows. We give our patients specific care to attend to their needs in a low-stress environment. In addition, we educate our patients on how to take care of their body and perform activities with better body mechanics to help prevent re-injury.

Can you provide specific examples of exercises or techniques used in car accident recovery?

Proper Breathing is the first thing we teach as it plays a huge role in helping the nervous system heal. This also trains the body to engage the core correctly, which is the foundation to all movement. We treat the body as a whole and usually start with manual therapy to help decrease tension and improve the mechanics of the injured area. Once we have improved the functional mobility of the body, we strengthen using exercises in pain-free ranges of motion.

What are some general benefits of physical therapy?

Physical therapy has many benefits after a car accident, including: improved functional mobility, strength, stability, endurance, balance and pain-reduction. All of this helps our patients return to activities and sport.
