How do I know if physical therapy is working for me?
This is a question that we as clinicians get asked frequently. Depending on severity of symptoms, or specific diagnoses, it can be hard to determine progress from a subjective point of view. So, how do you know if physical therapy is working? Let’s dive in!
What are foot compensations?
Your physical therapy journey begins with an initial evaluation. At this first appointment, your physical therapist will ask you questions about your pain and symptoms, as well as your goals for therapy. From here, the therapist will conduct an objective exam, utilizing specific tests and measures pertaining to the area of concern in order to rule in or rule out specific diagnoses. Once we have gathered the information that we need, the therapist will make a Plan of Care, which lays out how we plan to achieve your specific goals through physical therapy. We will then give you exercises specific to your needs to help improve strength and mobility in order to meet your goals. From this point, your therapist will give you exercises to be completed at home between follow-up sessions.

Your next milestone in your physical therapy journey is the re-evaluation. During this appointment, the therapist will re-perform the tests and measures from the initial evaluation. We then compare the data from the two sessions in order to objectively measure your progress. Additionally, we will ask how you have felt throughout the therapy process thus far. Based on these pieces of information, we are able to measure your progress, and adjust your plan of care accordingly. Goals will be consistently readdressed throughout follow-up sessions, and not just at re-evaluations. We want to help you celebrate all the big and small victories!

Progress in physical therapy can come in many shapes and sizes. We measure it based on how much range of motion or strength you have gained, whether or not we have met your goals, and most importantly, on how you as a patient feel. Personal progress can be measured in how confident you feel to perform specific tasks, being able to walk an extra 15 minutes, or even not needing to take as many breaks when performing activities. Once you have made the desired amount of progress, decided by both the therapist and yourself, you will be discharged from physical therapy! We do not keep patients longer than what is necessary. It’s our job to make you not need us anymore!

Physical therapy is a team effort between the clinician and the patient. If you are unsure if physical therapy is working for you, ask your therapist! We are more than happy to review your plan of care, discuss personal progress, and answer any other questions you may have in order to make you feel more comfortable.
